Fossil Hunter | Robert L. Fuqua

March 14, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Zendog Divers is an informal dive club for like-minded people. Our mission is focused on local Florida diving including: safety, marine conservation and continuing dive education.

Ten million years ago when Florida was underwater, the area was surrounded by sharks. When the land was eventually uncovered, and so was their teeth. Storms and waves eventually pushed the fossils along the coast and onto the beach and into shallow waters with a fossil layer running 18 to 35 feet deep. Join us Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. to meet this month’s speaker, fossil expert and author, Robert L. Fuqua.

Born in central Kansas, Fuqua has always been interested in everything that lived in the water. Fuqua graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years doing intelligence work and then, worked as a civilian for the National Security Agency in Maryland. After serving for 30 years, he and his wife moved to the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World,” Venice, Florida in 2004.

Fuqua has a passion for diving, especially for fossils and sharks teeth. He has found over 5,000 fossilized sharks teeth.

Unlike many other coastal cities in the area, Venice, Florida sits directly on the Gulf of Mexico and has several waterways, creeks, lakes and ponds. It is home to the Shark Tooth Festival and draws hundreds of tourists and snowbirds every year.
