Coral Restoration Foundation Keys Weekend
November 14, 2015 @ 8:00 am - November 15, 2015 @ 2:00 pm
$275.00We are headed to the beautiful Key Largo on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 for some fun, easy diving and coral planting with the Coral Restoration Foundation. As part of our trip, we will partake in a coral planting class and spend the rest of Saturday in the CRF nursery and planting out on the reefs.
Staghorn and elkhorn coral can grow and reproduce through fragmentation: if a branch falls off on the reef and conditions are favorable, it can reattach to the rock and begin to grow a new colony. Using this concept, the CRF takes advantage of this naturally occurring process by growing corals in our offshore underwater nurseries until they are large enough to be outplanted on the reef. 50 new elkhorn and almost 1,000 new staghorn corals at Key Largo Dry Rocks join the nearly 12,000 corals already outplanted in the Upper Keys this year. These outplantings were made possible by generous funders and volunteers who help plant the corals.
